Love Story #1330
My Best Friend's Boyfriend
by Jean
Mike and I met in 1997 at a Christian youth conference. We shared a mutual acquaintance that turned out to be a matchmaker. I really liked him from the moment I met him, he was only a month older than me, and I was just 16. I was dating someone else at the time, and he and my best friend Robyn hit it off really well. Two weeks later, she called to tell me that they had decided to try a long distance relationship. I didn't tell her I had feelings for her boyfriend. They ended up dating for almost a year and a half.
Mike and I crossed paths again, just days after he and Robyn broke up. We were in Estes Park, Colorado, and we somehow ended up climbing a mountain by ourselves. (Robyn later told me that she knew Mike and I were perfect for each other, so she shooed off everyone else.) We ended up sitting on a rock that jutted out of the mountain for four hours. It was the most incredible conversation I have ever had. After we left Estes Park, he and I talked on the phone weekly. Sometimes even daily. On May 26, 1998, he and I officially began a relationship. We have suffered some tough times, some hard issues, and some adversity, but we survived that. Then came the Army.
Mike had signed a contract before we started dating for early entry into the Army. I knew going into this relationship that I would possibly not see him for four years. Two weeks before I left for a missions trip to Mexico, and Four weeks before he left for boot camp, he came to see me.
It was my birthday and he arrived at the train station at 3 am. Boy, that was really early. The minute I saw him again it was like a movie. He dropped his bags and we ran into each other's arms. We hugged and kissed, and held each other for the whole ride home. He stayed for two weeks, and those were two of the most glorious weeks of my life. He left for boot camp and we corresponded a lot. When he finally was given a home base, I nearly freaked. He was going to Ft. Stewart, outside of Savannah Georgia!!! I was heartbroken, because I was all the way in Kansas. He has been in the Army for 2 years now, and we are staying very open and honest and loving with each other. He is getting an honorable discharge in a few months, and he will be attending college with me. In August of 2003, we plan on getting married. Wish us luck.
